About this book
The Rooftop Sky Club opens the last slips in the Question Jar. Across ten evenings, Memoon and her friends ask how light reveals the history of the Universe, sorting what is known from hints and guesses.
The final book links photons, atomic energy levels and stellar fusion with galaxy redshifts, expansion, the Hubble tension, the cosmic microwave background and evidence for the hot Big Bang. Rotation curves and accelerating expansion introduce dark matter and dark energy as open questions.
Includes worked calculations, the Cosmic Researcher meteor-counting project, a badge, quiz with explained answers and an 81-slide classroom PDF deck. Invented practice data are identified and model limits remain part of each conclusion.
How each chapter works
Illustrated story chapters combine Science Corners, diagrams, worked examples, Space Detective questions and supervised activities. Includes glossary, quiz with explained answers, project, observing guidance and parent/teacher notes.
What they’ll learn
- Calculate photon energies and connect colour, temperature and atomic spectral lines.
- Explain how fusion powers the Sun using mass-energy reasoning.
- Calculate redshift and estimate a Hubble constant from a graph.
- Interpret uncertainty and compare expansion estimates.
- Explain the cosmic microwave background and independent evidence for the hot Big Bang.
- Read galaxy rotation curves and distinguish evidence from guesses about unseen matter.
- Plan a testable investigation and report results with uncertainty.

The project: Cosmic Researcher Project
Plan a meteor-counting investigation, observe with an adult and report a rate with uncertainty. Record a question, advance prediction, method, timed tally, conclusion, limits and new question. Allow an evening to plan, a night to observe and an evening to write up. The invented galaxy table offers a cloudy-day graphing alternative.
Who it’s for
Grade 12 readers aged 17-18, reading independently with parent or teacher support for calculations and supervised activities.
What you need: A notebook, pencil, ruler, calculator, clock, warm clothing and a safe dark observing spot chosen by an adult. Familiarity with algebra, graphs and energy helps. Adults supervise night observing and practical work. Never look at the Sun or point optics near it.
