About this book
Beautine hides three perfect acorns using the tip of a tree's shadow as her landmark. By afternoon the shadow has moved and her treasure is missing. Memoon and her friends become Shadow Detectives, following clues with a stick clock, a sky map and Kachui's Moon diary.
Eight illustrated story chapters explore moving shadows, the four main directions, the changing Moon and daytime Moon-watching. The friends join stars into constellations, find the Pole Star with the Saptarishi's pointer stars, and learn why a fair measure matters when they return for the treasure.
Includes a recap, glossary, eight-question quiz with a bonus challenge and explained answers, a one-week Shadow Tracker project, Sky Heroes, a Mistake Museum and a Sky Club badge. The matching 62-slide classroom PDF supports all eight chapters with questions, diagrams and supervised activities.
How each chapter works
Each chapter combines an illustrated story, a Look closer science box, Space Detective questions and an adult-supervised Try it activity, with alternatives for cloudy days or limited materials and notes on what each model can show.
What they’ll learn
- Discover how blocking light makes a shadow and why shadows change through the day.
- Make a stick clock and compare long morning shadows with shorter midday shadows.
- Find north, east, south and west using landmarks, shadows and an adult's help.
- Keep a Moon diary and use a torch-and-ball model to explore its changing appearance.
- Discover the daytime Moon and join stars into named constellations.
- Find the Pole Star using the Saptarishi's pointer stars, with an adult.
- Follow shadow clues, use a consistent measure and test predictions against evidence.

The project: Shadow Tracker
Spend about ten minutes a day for one week tracking a stick's shadow at the same time each day. Keep the pot in the same place, mark the shadow tip, and record sunny or cloudy weather. On day seven, identify a pattern, make a prediction and check it. An adult supervises; indoor torch-and-toy alternatives are included.
Who it’s for
Grade 2 children, with a parent or teacher reading alongside them. Suitable for shared reading and early independent reading. Builds on Earth's turning from Book 1; an adult supervises all activities and evening or early-morning observations.
What you need: An adult, a notebook, pencils, a straight stick or ruler in a pot of soil or clay, chalk or pebbles, and a torch and ball. A compass is optional. Wear a hat outdoors, keep torch light away from eyes, and never look at the Sun, including at sunrise or sunset or through sunglasses, binoculars or a telescope.
