About this book
Guddu asks the Rooftop Sky Club to help choose an orbit for the fictional SkyClub-1 CubeSat. Which orbit suits the mission, and can the friends defend their calculations and assumptions?
Ten story chapters develop universal gravitation, field strength, circular-orbit speed and period, Kepler's laws, planetary mass, orbital energy, escape speed and Hohmann transfers. Maths and concept tracks connect worked calculations with physical meaning.
Includes an Orbit Design Sheet, Orbit Engineer badge, quiz with explained answers, Mistake Museum and an 83-slide classroom PDF deck. The satellite and contest are fictional; nothing is built or launched.
How each chapter works
Illustrated story chapters combine Science Corners, diagrams, worked examples, Space Detective questions and supervised activities. Includes glossary, quiz with explained answers, project, observing guidance and parent/teacher notes.
What they’ll learn
- Use inverse-square gravity and distinguish mass, gravitational force and apparent weight.
- Calculate circular-orbit speeds and periods at different heights.
- Test Kepler's laws and infer a central body's mass from an orbit.
- Connect orbital energy, drag and changes of altitude.
- Calculate escape speeds and explain Hohmann transfers.
- Compare low Earth and geostationary orbits using several mission criteria.
- Present a checked orbit design with units and assumptions.

The project: Orbit Design Sheet
Choose a small satellite mission and a circular orbit from 300 to 1,200 km. Calculate gravity, speed, period and energy, estimate a best-case pass, compare with geostationary orbit and list at least five assumptions. Ask a friend or teacher to check a calculation. Allow about 90 minutes.
Who it’s for
Grade 11 readers aged 16-17, reading independently with parent or teacher support for calculations and supervised activities.
What you need: A notebook, squared paper, calculator and ruler, with adult or teacher support for activities. Algebra, powers, square roots, circular motion and energy are assumed. Night observing needs an adult. Never look at the Sun or point optics near it. Thought experiments need no launchers.
