About this book

The Rooftop Sky Club's Moon Log begins with a puzzle: a clear sky and no Moon. Kachui opens the Question Jar, bringing back questions saved since the first adventures. Why does the Moon change shape? Why is winter cold? And can Simbha plan a party for the night the Moon turns red?

Nine illustrated story chapters use observations, tables and simple models to distinguish Moon phases from Earth's shadow, test the idea that seasons come from distance, and explain how Earth's tilt changes sunlight and day length. The friends compare seasons across India, explore lunar calendars, and investigate why eclipses do not happen every month.

Includes a glossary, eight-question quiz with a bonus challenge and explained answers, a Month-Long Moon Log, Sky Heroes, a Mistake Museum, observing guidance and a Moon Logger badge. The matching 64-slide classroom PDF covers all nine chapters with diagrams, questions and supervised activities.

How each chapter works
Illustrated chapters combine a continuing story with Science Corners, Space Detective questions, diagrams and supervised Try it activities. Predict-observe- explain tasks, tables, indoor alternatives and model-limit notes support reasoning.

What they’ll learn

  • Model Moon phases as changing views of the Moon's sunlit half, rather than Earth's shadow.
  • Record the Moon's shape and position and connect its cycle with lunar calendars.
  • Test a distance-based explanation of seasons against evidence from both hemispheres.
  • Use a tilted ball and torch to explore sunlight angle, day length and seasons.
  • Compare heat and rainy seasons across India and distinguish weather from astronomy.
  • Explain solar and lunar eclipses and why the Moon's tilted orbit prevents monthly eclipses.
  • Keep a month-long log, compare predictions with observations and explain model limits.

The project: Month-Long Moon Log

Spend about two minutes each evening for around thirty days recording the date, time, sky conditions, Moon shape and position from the same place. Predict the next three evenings after the first week, then check. Arrange the drawings into a phase strip and explain the pattern. Record cloudy nights honestly; mark any model- or reference-based entries so they remain distinct from observations. An adult accompanies all evening observations.

Who it’s for

Grade 4 children aged 9-10. Children can read the story independently, with an adult sharing the Science Corners, diagrams and activities. Builds on reflected moonlight, observation, rotation and revolution from Books 1-3.

What you need: An adult, a notebook, pencil, clock, paper or card for a Moon wheel, a lamp or torch, balls, squared paper and materials for simple models. Adult help is needed with cutting, hot bulbs, cables and all rooftop or evening activities. For solar observations, use an adult-supervised pinhole picture on paper and never look through the pinhole or directly at the Sun. Sunglasses are not safe solar viewers.
