About this book
Simbha wonders why Sirius flickers while Jupiter shines steadily. Memoon and the Rooftop Sky Club trace the mystery through mirrors, water, moving air and prisms, testing each explanation against evidence.
Ten story chapters connect reflection and Snell's law with dispersion, diffraction, spectral fingerprints, Doppler shifts and telescope resolution. Readers build a CD spectroscope and state claims with evidence, limits and confidence.
Includes the Street-Lamp Spectra project, Spectrum Scientist badge, quiz with explained answers, Sky Heroes, Mistake Museum and parent/teacher guidance. This purchase contains the ebook.
How each chapter works
Illustrated story chapters combine Science Corners, diagrams, worked examples, Space Detective questions and supervised activities. Includes glossary, quiz with explained answers, project, observing guidance and parent/teacher notes.
What they’ll learn
- Test why stars twinkle and planets usually appear steadier.
- Measure reflection and predict refraction with Snell's law.
- Distinguish prism dispersion from CD-grating diffraction.
- Build and calibrate a spectroscope; compare continuous, emission and absorption spectra.
- Identify elements from spectral patterns and report uncertainty.
- Calculate radial velocity and compare telescope aperture and resolution.

The project: Street-Lamp Spectra
Build and calibrate a shoebox spectroscope. On three evenings, with an adult, record at least three lamp types. Sketch spectra, estimate wavelengths and uncertainties, and present each identification with evidence, limits and confidence. Label borrowed comparison spectra as reported.
Who it’s for
Grade 10 readers aged 15-16, reading independently with parent or teacher support for calculations and supervised activities.
What you need: An adult, notebook, torch, mirrors, protractor, prism and materials for a shoebox CD spectroscope. Adults cut the CD. Never point optics at the Sun, touch lamps or break fluorescent lamps. Stay away from traffic for Doppler activities.
