About this book

Noodles the cat has lost his warm patch of sunlight. Has someone moved it? Memoon and her friends follow the clues through seven illustrated story chapters, discovering our round Earth, the Sun as a star, daytime stars, Earth's turning, and why the Moon seems to follow us.

Children practise noticing, asking, guessing, testing and explaining. Short science boxes separate the real discoveries from the talking animals and imaginary trips, while simple models explain both what they show and where they stop working.

Includes a recap, glossary, eight-question quiz with answers and explanations, a seven-day Sky Picture Diary, and guidance for parents and teachers. Every activity requires an adult; children are never asked to look at the Sun.

How each chapter works
Each chapter combines a short story, a Look closer science box, Space Detective questions and a supervised Try it activity, with indoor or low-resource alternatives and an explanation of each model's limits.

What they’ll learn

  • Notice and record how a sunny patch changes position during the day.
  • Understand that Earth is round even when the ground nearby looks flat.
  • Discover that the Sun is a star and distant stars remain in the daytime sky.
  • Use a torch-and-ball model to explain day and night as Earth turns.
  • Explore reflected moonlight and why the faraway Moon seems to follow us.
  • Make predictions, test ideas and change explanations when the evidence changes.

The project: My Sky Picture Diary

Spend five minutes a day for seven days drawing the sky, the sunny patch on the floor, and something noticed in the evening sky. Add one question each day. Use a notebook and pencils or crayons, with an adult for evening observations. Never look straight at the Sun; cloudy-day alternatives are included.

Who it’s for

Grade 1 children aged 6-7, with parents or teachers reading alongside them. Suitable for shared reading and early independent reading, with drawings and spoken answers encouraged. An adult supervises all activities.

What you need: An adult, paper, pencils or crayons, small pebbles or paper circles, a torch and a ball for simple models. Keep torch light away from eyes. Never look at the Sun, including through sunglasses, binoculars or a telescope.
