Reporting corruption — how safe is it, really?
Someone shared this message that's been circulating:
"INFORM CBI, BANGALORE ON CORRUPTION, DEMAND FOR BRIBE OR DISPROPORTIONATE ASSETS BY PUBLIC SERVANTS OF GOVT. OF INDIA/PSUs/BANKS (Mobile/WhatsApp: 9481606810 / 080-23331026)"
The landline number does match CBI's Anti-Corruption Branch, Bengaluru — so channels like this exist and are genuine.
But it raises a bigger question for our community: if you report a bribe demand or corruption by a government official, how safe do you actually feel doing it?

- Do you trust that your identity stays protected?

India does have a law meant to protect people who report corruption — the Whistle Blowers Protection Act, 2014. It set up a system for filing complaints against public servants for bribery, misuse of power, or disproportionate assets.
But here's the catch — a few gaps that come up a lot in discussions about this law:
🔹 No anonymous complaints — you have to reveal your identity to the authority you're complaining to. There's no option to stay anonymous while still having your complaint acted on.
🔹 Weak on-ground protection — the law doesn't have strong provisions for physical safety, relocation, or compensation if things go badly for the complainant.
🔹 Limited coverage — it mainly applies to public servants, not private sector corruption.
This law actually came out of some tragic real cases — people who exposed wrongdoing and paid a heavy price for it, which is part of why the law exists in the first place.
None of this means reporting is pointless — genuine cases do get investigated, and bigger/central agencies like CBI tend to be seen as more insulated from local pressure than, say, local police in some situations. But it does mean "the channel is genuine" and "it's completely safe" aren't automatically the same thing.
