Adi Durga Puja (Bangiya Samitee)

Berhampur's oldest and most historic Durga Puja, organised continuously since 1933 by the city's Bengali community under the banner of Bangiya Samitee — earning it the title "Adi" (the first) Durga Puja in the city. It began with Bengali railway employees settled near the Berhampur Railway Station in Hillpatna, and moved into a permanent pandal built in 1998 at Chatterjee Lane, near the Old Bus Stand opposite the Head Post Office. Priests, idol artisans and cooks are brought in from West Bengal every year to run the five-day celebration, which includes traditional dhak (drum) performances, Chandipatha recitations, and Sindoor Khela on Vijayadashami; the committee also serves Annaprasad (blessed food) to roughly 500 devotees daily throughout the puja.
