Balu Bazar Chandi Medha – Durga Puja

Balu Bazar's Binod Bihari pandal is where Cuttack's Durga Puja tradition itself began — between 1512 and 1517 AD, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu visited Cuttack and first started worshipping the goddess here, making this the city's oldest public Puja, still revered locally as "Bada Bhauni" (elder sister) after five centuries. The committee maintains the old tradition of using organic colours for the idol, and each year raises a soaring 30-foot silver filigree (chandi medha) tableau — among the tallest in the city — behind Durga, Saraswati, Laxmi and Ganesh. Expect crowds through Ashtami-Dashami evenings as devotees cross the Kathajodi riverbank to view the goddess at her birthplace pandal.
