Athachamayam 2026

Athachamayam is the grand ceremonial procession held at Thripunithura on Atham day that marks the start of the ten-day Onam festival, traditionally reenacting the Maharaja of Cochin's royal procession to the Thrikkakara Vamanamoorthy Temple. The parade features caparisoned elephants, decorated floats depicting scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana, and a spectacular lineup of Kerala's traditional art forms including Theyyam, Kummattikali, Kathakali, Pulikali, Thiruvathirakali and Karakattam, accompanied by Panchavadyam and Chenda Melam percussion ensembles. Once a private royal event, it has grown into one of Onam's most-attended public spectacles, drawing huge crowds along the Thripunithura route each year.
